Just thought I’d share with you a letter from a typical American.  From New Jersey, in fact.

A once-great nation has lost its values

To the Editor (of the Gloucester County Voices):

Wow! Catholic schools are closing. Who cares! Catholic schools only save New Jersey a mere $2 billion or $3 billion a year. Now all those children from the closed schools will pour into the public school system. Hey! Another tax increase.

Wow, that sounds expensive.

A voucher system for non-public schools would have prevented this. But giving parents and guardians school choice — that is a no, no.

That’s right, if that voucher also pays for religious indoctrination. Can we have the vouchers, but also have a comprehensive class-specific testing system, no funds for religious training, no creationism in biology class, and regulations limiting who can be turned down for inclusion in private schools (those with public funding)? No, I didn’t thnk so.

You must recall that the Founding Fathers of this once-great nation were middle-aged Christians and that the Bible was the once the only school book.

Um, Jefferson was 33 when he composed the Declaration of Independence; Madison had just turned 25. They were Deists - pretty much the same as your modern-day agnostics. And they didn’t grow up on the Bible. Jefferson recommended to his young nephew that he learn both Spanish and French - both non-biblical languages. Our Founding Fathers weren’t ignorant Bible-thumpers. They actually valued a Liberal education.

We now have a president who did not want to be photographed in front of a statue of Jesus while speaking at a Catholic university.

Yeah, he didn’t want Fox News to be able to say that he was claiming that Jesus “stood behind him” or that he was “backed by Jesus”. Maybe you should admire him for that.

If I recall, Russia was once called the “Evil Empire.” Well, I have to give Obama credit, as we now can lay claim to that title. I wonder what George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc., would have said about such nonsense.

Neither Jefferson nor Washington would have arranged to have a statue of Jesus placed behind them when they posed for a painting. In fact, neither did: they would have been alarmed by such political arrogance.

Yes, the lid is off the garbage can. Same-sex unions, free clean needles for druggies, pornography — and it goes on and on. Babies can be killed in or out of the womb, over a million a year, no problem! But hurt a cat or dog, and off to prison you go.

Yeah, the garbage can: gays, drug addicts (like Rush Limbaugh), the pornography (that you watch, Conservative America), a black President. Where will it go next? Oh, yeah, killing babies even after they’re out of the womb, maybe at their first or second birthday parties.

Yes, you guessed it, I’m from the old school — senior citizen, retired military, raised a Christian.

Yup: you loved segregation, you’d like to nuke the Middle East, and you think we’re a Christian nation: anybody who doesn’t like that should be rounded up and “asked” to leave.

Time to put on my Sunday best and go to church. I hope and pray that God will overlook this mess, and give Obama a road map to follow as He did when the Founding Fathers declared that this was one nation under God.

Yes, it’s time to pretend that you’re going to church. To pretend that something has radically changed in the U.S. with Obama’s election. And of course to pretend that the “Under God” line in the modern “Pledge Of Allegiance” wasn’t added by the U.S. Senate in the 1950’s. There was no “Pledge Of Allegiance” in the time of the Founding Fathers: they would have associated such a loyalty oath with the hated Sassenach. And the “under God” part with lunatics like you.
